The Urban League of Palm Beach County is aware of the enormous financial burdens that the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic is causing for individuals and families throughout our community.
It is particularly hard on our most vulnerable, low-income residents. Many are in dire need to prevent from going hungry or getting sick. And life is only going to get harder for them in the coming days and weeks.
Look at these devastating numbers:
- More than 6.6 million people filed for unemployment benefits in the US in early April, including 227,000 in Florida. Experts predict our nation and state could see 20-30 percent unemployment by the summer — the highest level since the Great Depression.
- At any given time, more than 189,000 people don’t know where they will get their next meal in Palm Beach County. Now, that number is expected to be considerably higher.
Thousands of Palm Beach County residences cannot wait for federal stimulus checks. They need money now for basic necessities.
As a result, the Urban League of Palm Beach County has started an emergency online campaign to collect donations to take care of our community. We will buy gift cards and get them directly to the people who need help the most – right now.
We are asking everyone (locally, nationally, and globally) to donate $1 or more so we can help residents purchase food, water, cleaning supplies, and other essentials during these tough times.
Please consider a donation. Your resources, collective passion and commitment will help feed our community and save lives.
