During an interview with Complex, SZA discussed the importance of manifestations regarding her life, career and upcoming performances.
After revealing recently that she wants to perform her hit single “Love Galore” with Travis Scott, SZA says she’s excited to celebrate the fourth anniversary of her debut album, CTRL, with a virtual showcase on Thursday.
“I’m excited to get back at it, just feel their energy and engage,” she tells Complex. “It’s weird to sing songs that I haven’t listened to in a billion years because I don’t listen to my own music recreationally.”
The R&B singer admits that she only listened to CTRL “on the third anniversary, which was last year.” She also says it’s been an “emotional” rollercoaster revisiting some of her favorite tracks and the feelings that consumed her in 2017.
“It’s emotional because you get to think about everything it meant to you prior,” SZA explains. “Thinking about ’20 Something’ and what it represented at that time versus now is: thinking about my grandma, thinking about Mac [Miller], thinking about all the people that I lost in quarantine. That song is about people who aren’t here. So some of the songs have new meaning and even more emotional weight than when I made them.”
SZA says she “never imagined [CTRL] would be this impactful — or as impactful as it was,” nor did she imagine it would hit #1 on Billboard‘s Top R&B Albums chart.
Catch SZA performing your favorite CTRL songs during American Express’ UNSTAGED series on Thursday, June 17, at 8. p.m. ET. Tickets and more information are available at Live-Now.com.
