Statue of Harriet Tubman Replaces Christopher Columbus

A monument dedicated to Christopher Columbus removed during the George Floyd protests’ has been
replaced with a statue of Harriet Tubman.

 

CNN says the 25-foot statue entitled “Shadow Of a Face” was unveiled in Newark, New Jersey last week and will stand in the newly renamed Harriet Tubman square.

 

The mayor of the town Ras Baraka said:

 

“In a time when so many cities are choosing to topple statutes that limit the scope of their people’s story, we have chosen to erect a monument that spurs us into our future story of exemplary strength and solidity,”

 

According to the National Women’s History Museum, Harriet Tubman was known to be the first black woman to serve in the military and most notably freed dozens of slaves through The Underground Railroad in the late 1800’s she died in 1913 with military honors.
