Robin Thicke is opening up about what his life was like after separating from longtime love Paula Patton.

Speaking to Extra recently, the “Blurred Lines” hitmaker revealed that his divorce was anything but easy — but the two worked hard to protect their son, Julian.

“When we were first going through divorce, there was bickering,” revealed Thicke of his 2015 separation.

In order to protect Julian, says the Grammy nominee, “We used co-parenting couples therapy and that really opened the door for communication in a much better way for us.”

Although the divorce was painful, Thicke says he and his ex-partner did it the right way because his now 10-year-old son “is thriving.”

“Nothing makes you prouder as parents when you had some tough times … figured it out, and your son is thriving because of it,” he smiled.

Both Patton and Thicke, who fell in love as teenagers and married in 2005, have since moved on with new romantic partners.

Thicke has since proposed to model April Love Geary, whom he shares daughters Mia, who is three, and Lola, who is two.  The two recently welcomed their third child, a son named Luca.

The Masked Singer judge recently released his eighth studio album, On Earth, and in Heaven, which he says captures his life story since issuing his last studio effort, 2014’s Paula.

“Over the last seven years, I’ve been through just about everything a human being can go through,” he says. “I lost my father. My house burned down. I’ve been divorced. I fell in love. I have three new children… And so I really… rededicated myself to my music last year, and this album is the result of that.”
