Regina Hall stars with Samuel L. Jackson in the new version of Shaft, opening today, and Hall reveals that the veteran actor’s preparation for the film went far beyond his own role.
“What's interesting about him, he even knew my lines," she tells The Hollywood Reporter. “That means he knew everything.”
Jackson stars in the title role, and Hall portrays his former wife, Maya. They have a son, JJ, played by Jessie T. Usher. Hall loved working on the film, especially with Jackson, Usher, co-stars Richard Roundtree, Alexandra Shipp, Luna Lauren Velez, director Tim Story, and writer Kenya Barris.
Hall is now preparing to host the BET Awards for the first time. She says one of her challenges is entertaining the television viewers as well as the live audience.
"I'm trying to figure out what is my way into that,” she says. “Obviously, I'm not a stand-up and I'm not a musician either. I'm pulling together ideas] so that I can have something. The producers have been really great, we've been going through ideas and they've been really supportive."
The 2019 BET Awards air live on June 23 at 8 p.m. ET from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on BET.
