The Palm Beach County School Board unanimously approved Michael J. Burke as the interim Superintendent to replace Dr. Donald Fennoy.
Burke is currently serving as the district’s Chief Financial Officer. The announcement was made at Wednesday’s school board meeting.
His newly appointed role comes just one week after Dr. Fennoy announced he would be resigning as the district’s top leader to spend more time with his family.
During the meeting, Burke thanked the school board for entrusting him with the responsibility. He also thanked Dr. Fennoy for guiding the district through what he called, “the most challenging times in modern history.”
School Board Chairman Frank Barbieri suggested the possibility of moving Fennoy to a lesser position before his departure then have the interim superintendent take over those responsibilities. He also suggested at least a two-week transition period to get the interim caught up to speed.
Burke’s new role is expected to go into effect once the contract is signed, which should take place at the next school board meeting.
In the meantime, the search is underway for a permanent replacement for Dr. Fennoy.
