Palm Beach County declares state of emergency because of COVID-19

The Palm Beach County Board of County Commissioners unanimously voted to declare an emergency Tuesday following a COVID-19 update from Health Director Dr. Alina Alonso.

Alonso said the state of Florida has a daily positivity rate of 18.5% — and Palm Beach County is higher than that at 19.4%.

With more than 1,000 new COVID-19 cases per day, Alonso said this means community spread is happening and numbers are expected to continue going up. The Delta variant is currently making up most of the new cases, she said.

Lakeside Medical Center in Belle Glade has maxed its intensive care unit bed capacity and county commissioners believe more needs to be done to help those in the medical field.

Palm Beach County Mayor Dave Kerner said he looks forward to the order being ‘executed and published’

The final text of the state of emergency has not yet been finalized.

This is a developing story and will be updated as information becomes available.
