Back in 2014, Jessie J teamed up with Nicki Minaj and Ariana Grande for the smash hit ‘Bang Bang.’ The track went on to peak at number three on the Hot 100 and was nominated for a Grammy for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance.
Fans of the song, as well as the three artists involved, were surprised to see ‘Bang Bang’ back in the headlines this week seven years after it dropped. The drama all started when Jesse J spoke with Glamour about the song’s origin. “Nicki was played it in the studio and was like, ‘I’ve got to jump on this.’ We didn’t go to her and ask; she wanted to do it,” Jessie recalled.
Nicki caught wind of the comments, however, and took to Twitter to share her own memory of how she came to be involved in the project. “I didn’t hear the song & ask 2get on it,” she tweeted. “The label asked me 2 get on it & paid me. How would I have heard the song? Chiiille what am I the damn song monitor? Snoopin around for songs chile? This was said by another artist recently as well. Yall gotta stop. LoveU.”
Following Nicki’s response, Jessie shared a lengthy post on Instagram to apologize and add context to her comments. According to the ‘Do It Like A Dude’ singer, she believes she was being “gassed up” by her record label at the time she was told Nicki wanted in on the track. She also revealed she didn’t know Ari was a co-writer on the song.
“If we can’t laugh in the lives we have been blessed with. What’s the point. It really isn’t that deep,” Jessie began, sharing a series of memes about the ongoing ‘Bang Bang’ drama on Instagram.
