Netflix has released the first trailer for the Madam C.J. Walker biopic Self Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam C.J. Walker.
Directed by Kasi Lemmons and executive-produced by Spencer and LeBron James, the limited series is based on Walker’s great-great-granddaughter A’Lelia Bundles's book On Her Own Ground: The Life and Times of Madam C. J. Walker.
Octavia Spencer stars as Walker, born Sarah Breedlove, an entrepreneur who became the wealthiest African-American businesswoman in the U.S. by developing and marketing a line of beauty and hair products for black women, via her Madame C.J. Walker Manufacturing Company.
"I want my whole line of products," says Spencer in the promo. "That's why I want to open up my own factory."
As previously reported, the four-part series stars Blair Underwood as Walker's husband, C.J. Walker, and Tiffany Haddish as her daughter, Lelia. It also features Carmen Ejogo as Walker’s business rival, Addie Munroe; Garrett Morris as Walker’s father-in-law; Kevin Carroll as Walker's longtime lawyer, Freeman Ransom; and Bill Bellamy as Ransom’s cousin, Sweetness.
Self Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam C.J. Walker debuts on Netflix March 20.
