Netflix drops the first trailer for Self Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam C.J. Walker

Netflix has released the first trailer for the Madam C.J. Walker biopic Self Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam C.J. Walker.

Directed by Kasi Lemmons and executive-produced by Spencer and LeBron James, the limited series is based on Walker’s great-great-granddaughter A’Lelia Bundles's book On Her Own Ground: The Life and Times of Madam C. J. Walker.

Octavia Spencer stars as Walker, born Sarah Breedlove, an entrepreneur who became the wealthiest African-American businesswoman in the U.S. by developing and marketing a line of beauty and hair products for black women, via her Madame C.J. Walker Manufacturing Company.

"I want my whole line of products," says Spencer in the promo. "That's why I want to open up my own factory."

As previously reported, the four-part series stars Blair Underwood as Walker's husband, C.J. Walker, and Tiffany Haddish as her daughter, Lelia. It also features Carmen Ejogo as Walker’s business rival, Addie MunroeGarrett Morris as Walker’s father-in-law; Kevin Carroll as Walker's longtime lawyer, Freeman Ransom; and Bill Bellamy as Ransom’s cousin, Sweetness.

Self Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam C.J. Walker debuts on Netflix March 20.
