One of Michelle Obama‘s pet projects as first lady was her Let’s Move! campaign, which encouraged healthier food in schools, better food labeling and more physical activity for children, and she’s expanding on that with her new Netflix show, Waffles + Mochi.
The new children’s show, according to the streamer, “is an exciting invitation to get kids and grown-ups cooking together in the kitchen and connecting to cultures around the globe.” Mrs. Obama plays the supermarket owner who helps “two taste-buddies” Waffles and Mochi on their foodie mission.
As Mrs. Obama told E! News on Wednesday, the goal of the show is to show families “affordable and doable meals.”
“Oftentimes,” she continued, “if you know what you’re doing in the kitchen, it can be more affordable to cook at home than to go out.”
A crucial step in that process, according to the former first lady, is providing access to “affordable, fresh produce.”
“We’re hoping that we can encourage people to really advocate for more communities to have this kind of access,” she explains. “And that way they can try these recipes for themselves and realize that you can save money. If you buy a whole chicken and cut it up, it’s cheaper than buying a chicken in parts.”
The show also includes celebrity appearances, and Mrs. Obama revealed two that are high on her wish list.
“I’m sure Adele is on the list,” she says. “And I know that Beyoncè and Adele both have children of Waffles + Mochi watching age. I think we’d be happy with whoever wanted to join in on the fun.”
Waffles + Mochi is streaming now on Netflix.
