Arriving one day before what would have been the Notorious B.I.G‘s 50th birthday on May 21, the legendary rapper’s new song, “G.O.A.T.,” is his first track dropped in 17 years.
With features from hip-hop favorite Ty Dolla $ign and Nigerian singer Bella Alubo, the song comes as part of a massive birthday celebration kicking off in New York this weekend with a lighting ceremony at the Empire State Building.
“It’s wonderful to witness my son’s music reimagined for his fans and today’s generation of young men and women to embrace his art,” Biggie’s mother, Voletta Wallace, said. “I appreciate the hard work of all involved in bringing together the perfect blend of voices and music to this song, G.O.A.T.”
One of those voices, Ty Dolla $ign, says a collaboration with Biggie is a dream come true. “Being on a song with Biggie has been a dream of mine since I was a kid,” he said. “The song title is fitting of him…the G.O.A.T. Happy Birthday, Big. We miss you!”
New music isn’t the only way fans and fellow artists can celebrate the legend’s birthday on Saturday. In addition to the lighting ceremony, there will be a crown spinning at the Empire State Building; the Lincoln Center will host an orchestral tribute on June 10; and the Life After Death 25th Anniversary Super Deluxe Boxed Set will be released June 10.
