John Legend couldn’t be any happier that Michael B. Jordan dethroned him as People‘s Sexiest Man Alive.
The 2019 winner saluted Jordan on Wednesday, who was handed the title on Tuesday, and expressed nothing but relief that he can now spend his days focusing on his wife’s cooking.
“Congratulations to my brother Michael B! And thank you,” Legend praised in a hilarious concession speech on Twitter. “I can now keep gaining this quarantine weight in peace without the pressure of a title to maintain.”
The “Wild” singer made it known that he had been counting down the days until People crowned the next Sexiest Man Alive.
“I’ve appreciated the whole experience and I’ve been trying to have a lot of fun with it, but I’m so ready to relinquish this title,” Legend told People in September. “I’ve truly enjoyed just making fun of myself throughout it because you can’t take yourself too seriously when someone calls you the Sexiest Man Alive.”
Jordan reflected similar sentiments as Legend’s during his Tuesday night appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!
The Just Mercy star revealed that he was in a car with friends when his management team told him the good news, who proceeded to mock him relentlessly.
“When you get ‘Sexiest Man’ it’s, like, that’s cool to everybody else. But to anyone that really knows you, that’s just another way they can give jabs to you,” grinned Jordan. “With friends like this, why do you need enemies?”
And, while Legend is happy to finally stop sucking in his gut, Jordan was asked if he feels any pressure to live up to the title of Sexiest Man.
“I think the expectation now is — it’s a little unreasonable,” the 33-year-old actor joked. “Just a little bit. But it’s a cool title to have.”
