After a dazzling 1960s-themed performance at the 2020 Soul Train Awards Sunday night, R&B vocalist Jazmine Sullivan now believes her latest single, “Pick Up Your Feelings,” will become the next viral challenge.
“I was kind of more focused on the feel of [“Pick Up Your Feelings”] and lyricism. So on this particular song, I was singing on it,” said Sullivan during a virtual press conference for the Soul Train Awards. “So I think that when people hear it, they’re gonna want to do a few runs from this song.”
A number of artists and fans on social media have attempted to mimic Sullivan’s vocal runs with covers of her singles “Insecure” and “Lost One,” the latter of which will be featured on her follow-up project to 2015’s Reality Show.
After a short hiatus, Sullivan decided to step back into the music scene, thinking of herself, her fans and her mother’s current battle with breast cancer, which she revealed in May.
“I feel like I owe it to myself and my mother and everything that she has fought and worked for with me to continue to give of myself,” said Sullivan. “Also, I get something as well from being [able to] connect to my fans and other people who can relate to the things that I’ve been through or relate to the struggle now even what I’m going through with my mother.”
Jazmine Sullivan’s forthcoming project is expected to arrive this winter.
