As a newcomer on the drill scene, Ice Spice is a fan of the late Pop Smoke. In her cover interview with Dazed, she shared that she listened to his music before starting her music career.
“I love Pop Smoke. He’s goated,” she says. “I was definitely bumping him every day. That was even before I started making music seriously, in the studio,” she said, adding she also jammed to drill stars Sheff G, Sleepy Hallow and Bizzy Banks. She said seeing more artists from the Bronx breaking onto the scene was motivating.
“When I started hearing about DThang and Kay Flock, and the Bronx started getting more attention and started having more artists come out, I was already recording by then … But hearing them was definitely more of a motivation too,” Ice says. “I feel like when there’s an artist buzzing out the Bronx, that gives other people a chance to shine too.”
Ice has since gone from shooting “Munch (Feelin’ U)” “in the park that I would go to every day growing up after school” to signing a deal with Capitol/10K and fielding requests from other artists, including a feature on “Boy’s a Liar Pt. 2” by PinkPantheress.
Ice is now looking forward to the future, which includes festival stages and “more singles leading up to my album.”
“I’m excited to do more collaborations with different artists from different genres,” she adds. “I’m excited to see the world and travel more. I feel like 2023 is gonna be goated.”
Ice’s cover story follows her cosign from Nicki Minaj, who recently followed her on Twitter. Nicki referred to Ice as “princess” in a tweet and shared her cover story on social media.
