Florence Ballard: A Supreme Performer

When Barry Gordy, Jr created Motown and “The Motown Sound” it was was short time afterwards he discovered a female trio from Detroit’s Brewster-Douglass Housing projects and initially named them The Primettes eventually choosing the name The Supremes.

The group was comprised of Diane Ross, Mary Wilson and Florence Ballard. Its been said Florence was the one who had the vocal POWER but ultimately Gordy chose Diana Ross as lead singer. Ballard sang on 10 of the groups 16 top 10 hits.  As a kid growing up in the 1960s I really loved Florence Ballard and her soulful sound. Tragically, she died on this date in 1976.
