Fans are reacting to Sharon Stone‘s recent comments where she argues that Oscar-winner Meryl Streep doesn’t set the bar for talented actress in Hollywood.
In a recent interview with Zoomer, where she was asked what it was like to star in a film with Streep, Stone hit back at the reporter that such a question was very one-sided.
“‘So when you finally got to work with Meryl Streep,’” Stone began. “I like the way you phrase that, that I finally got to work with Meryl Streep. You didn’t say, ‘Meryl finally got to work with Sharon Stone.’ Or we finally got to work together.”
“I think Meryl is an amazingly wonderful woman and actress,” Stone continued. “But in my opinion, quite frankly, there are other actresses equally as talented as Meryl Streep. The whole Meryl Streep iconography is part of what Hollywood does to women.”
Stone then listed the names of other actresses she felt on par with Streep, beginning with the Oscar-, Emmy- and Tony-winning actress Viola Davis.
“Viola Davis is every bit the actress Meryl Streep is. Emma Thompson. Judy Davis. Olivia Colman. Kate Winslet, for [Pete’s] sake. But you say Meryl and everybody falls on the floor,” she said.
Stone then hopped on Twitter to further elaborate, adding in part, “To be clear; Meryl Streep is one of the greatest actors of all times. Just not to the exclusion of others.”
Although some fans interpreted Stone’s comments negatively, many fans responded in support.
“Yessss! There are so many underrated actors who also need to be more appreciated, who have never received notice,” one tweeted.
“Speaking #Truth2Power should not be controversial But folks would rather guilt you into staying quiet I say screw that!,” shared another.
