TV One has tapped hip hop heavyweight Big Daddy Kane as part of the new class of “bad dads” in the Bad Dad Rehab sequel, Bad Dad Rehab: The Next Session.
Similar to the first film, The Next Session follows a group of deadbeat fathers who end up changing their ways after getting some much needed counseling. Kane tells ABC Audio that stepping into the role of Owen — a negligent father trying to create a relationship with his daughter after 30 years — was a new and exciting experience for him.
“Well, I thought that emotional side to it was something unique that I felt was a challenge that I wanted to pull off,” he says. ” And I love the writing as well.”
While tapping into a more vulnerable side allowed Kane to sharpen his acting skills, he says he didn’t have to do too much to understand Owen’s situation — even if it wasn’t his own.
“I was raised in a household with my mother and my father, and they stayed married until my mother passed, so I didn’t grow up in a broken home. But, I have a lot of friends who did,” Kane explains. “And, I remember those conversations, and a lot of them would be them telling me, ‘You’re lucky you got both your parents.’ So I could definitely relate.”
TV One’s Bad Dad Rehab: The Next Session, also starring Lamman Rucker, Blue Kimble, Onyekwere Eme-Akwari and Carlo Mendez, premieres on Sunday, June 20 at 8 p.m. ET. Check out a preview clip from the film at the network’s official YouTube channel.
