A woman in central Florida believes her kiss may have sent her baby to the hospital.
The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office arrested 39-year-old Amber Buzia, of Deltona, on aggravated child abuse charges last week.
Investigators say her 3-month-old boy ingested methadone.
Last week deputies said Buzia called 911 to say her son had trouble breathing when he woke up from a nap. She told deputies her son may have ingested methadone after she took a dose and kissed her baby before putting him down for a nap. Buzia said she used methadone to overcome a narcotics addiction.
Fire rescue crews rushed the baby to the hospital in critical condition. Doctors gave the baby a dose of Narcan. He’s now recovering.
According to the sheriff’s office, doctors found the baby also suffered a skull fracture. Buzia and the child’s father both denied how it happened. However, both said the boy fell out of a stroller about a month or two ago and suffered minor injuries.
The father isn’t facing charges in the case. The child has been removed from the couple’s home and is in the custody of the Department of Children and Families.
