Empire might be over, but Cookie Lyon is here to stay.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Fox is in the early stages of developing a spinoff of the Lee Daniels series, starring Taraji. P. Henson, who played Cookie for all of the show’s six seasons.

The spinoff’s official plot remains under wraps, but sources say the as-yet untitled show will “follow Cookie as she moves to L.A.,” potentially with a few appearances from other family members.

The will the first project under Henson’s TPH Entertainment company, as part of a two-year deal she inked with now Disney-owned 20th Century Fox Television.

“I believe that normalizing stories around stigmatizing matters will make them more palatable for audiences to embrace,” Henson said. “Art can change perception and I plan to develop projects that can help further the conversation. I also aim to help cultivate and establish new young talent and their stories because they are our future and deserve a voice and a platform to be heard.”

Daniels has been interested in a Henson-led spinoff for years but now seems a fitting time, since the Fox drama wrapped its final season in April. The cast shot 18 episodes of its 20-episode season before production were shut down due to COVID-19.
