Fresh from his role as Jim Brown in Regina King‘s One Night in MiamiAldis Hodge is following in the steps of the football legend-turned-actor.

The actor said he and King made a “creative decision” not to reach out for guidance from the NFL legend about the portrayal of his character in the film.

“It was really a creative decision to sort of work within what I saw of him to be because I wanted to present what I felt was a celebration of who I found him to be,” Hodge told Variety. “I hope I did okay. I haven’t spoken to him personally about it, but I heard through the grapevine that he saw it and he was happy with it.”

Like Brown, who also became a successful businessman outside of his football parameters, Hodge is focused on pushing his artist collective, 9B, which specializes in entertainment projects.

“What we really want to do is prioritize opening up a lane for artists of color,” he continues. “He knew his value as a businessman and then he wanted to spread that business acumen to the people and help educate the Black community on economic potential and power.”

Up next, Hodge stars in the upcoming film, Black Adam, which he says has yet to begin shooting. While he waits, the actor said he’s been admiring Instagram selfies from his co-star, Dwayne Johnson, to stay motiviated in the gym.

“It keeps me motivated because I’ll be in the gym taking a minute on a bike or something like that, and then I see him in the gym all swole and I’m like, ‘I must do better,'” adds Hodge.
