Al Roker Defends Meteorologist Fired for Racial Slur

  • Today show meteorologist and anchor Al Roker has spoken out about the weatherman who was fired for using a racial slur on air.
  • WHEC-TV meteorologist Jeremy Kappell was fired Monday. Three days earlier, he referred to Martin Luther King Jr. Park in Rochester, New York as Martin Luther Coon Jr. Park.
  • Roker tweeted, “I think @JeremyKappell made an unfortunate flub and should be given the chance to apologize on @news10nbc. Anyone who has done live tv and screwed up (google any number of ones I’ve done) understands.”
  • Kappell said the flub was just an accident. In a Facebook Live video, he told viewers, “That is not a word I said, I promise you that. If you did feel that it hurt you in any way, I sincerely apologize.” Kappell thanked Roker for his support and said it meant a lot to his family.
  • Do you think the station will give him a chance to apologize? Should he be hired back?
